Life Skills are psychological competencies which enable an individual develop adaptive and positive behavior so as to deal effectively with the challenges and demands of everyday life.
Personality Development (Better known as PD among velammalians) is the relatively enduring patters of thoughts,
feelings and behaviors that distinguish individuals from one another.
It revolves mainly around the 10 Core Life Skills namely:
Our trainers focus on empowering the 10 Core Life Skills prescribed by the WHO, to our students.
PD Trainers take great care and effort in educating the middle and senior level students on Adolescence with accurate age
appropriate and culturally relevant information, promote healthy attitudes & develop skills to enable them to respond to real
life situations and challenges in positive and responsible ways.
PD has reached out to students, parents and teachers of VNGP across all branches.
There is a constant reach and upgrading of our knowledge to reach out to the current needs of our stakeholders.
Some of our topics are
GOOD TOUCH BAD TOUCH In today’s world it is highly important that children understand the need to safe guard themselves
from the evil danger around them. Thus the PD trainers came up with a module that included the Swim Suit Rule; to educate them to
understand the differentiation between a good and a bad touch.
The parts of the body were differentiated under RED-DO NOT TOUCH, ORANGE – MAY OR MAY NOT TOUCH & GREEN- CAN TOUCH. This differentiation helps the children understand their need to safe guard themselves, why they need to do so, under what situations and circumstances they need to be safe and how they need to be safe.
SESSIONS ON LIFE SKILLS Periodic sessions on Life Skills were imparted to the students from class VI to XII. Age is no bar when it comes to internalizing the various life skills in our everyday living. Thus it is seen to that every class has PD at least once a week.
THE SEED Protecting our environment is our right and duty. Thus the PD department felt the need to train children on the same helping them realize the need for a safe environment with plants and trees in it. To kick start the session they came up with the activity of ‘The Seed’ where children were taught in detail on how to grow a small sapling.
HEALTH & HYGEINE Children were trained on health & hygiene and how cautious they needed to be with the same. Talking about health stress on the kind of food we should be eating; basically a healthy diet with a mixture of fruits, green vegetables, proteins & Carbohydrates avoiding junk food. As for hygiene they emphasized on the need for cleanliness of self and the food as well. They were trained on the importance to wash their hands before and after every meal, keeping nails both in the hands and toes as short as possible, keeping food closed and safe etc.
EARLY PUBERTY This session was conducted separately for girls and boys of classes 6, 7 & 8. It is most important that girls of this age knew what it meant by Puberty and what were the changes that would happen to them physically and emotionally. They get to understand on how to take care of oneself during their Menstrual Cycle, how they need to use Sanitary napkins and finally about the overall cleanliness of self and restrooms during their cycle. The trainers also spoke about the mental and emotional changes that they might go through during this period.
ADOLESCENCE & DISTRACTIONS The Adolescence Education Programme (AEP) is an important initiative that aims to empower young people with accurate, age appropriate and culturally relevant information, promote healthy attitudes and develop skills to enable them to respond to real life situations in positive and responsible ways. This session focused on developing an appropriate understanding of the conceptual framework of adolescence education. Adolescence education is an educational response to the needs, concerns and realities of adolescent students in the school. Having addressed adolescence the trainers will also address various distractions that they would go through during this period, ways by which they could get over their distractions and to get back to the right track.
STUDY SKILLS & MEMORY SKILLS The team strongly believe that once the student has understood the period of Adolescence and distractions that happen during this period, the student wishes to get back on track for studies. A strong helping hand to guide them during this phase resulted in yet another well researched content –Study & memory Skills. Thus a session on Study Skills and Memory Skills was done especially for the students of Class X & XII. These skills help the student to study better and in an easier way.
CAREER GUIDANCE PROGRAMME Dr. J.P. Gandhi; a renowned career guidance expert was called to do a half a day session which helped the students think on what they were going to do next. It was an informative session for the students of class XII. After this seminar, when students had more questions, the team suo moto took up the responsibility rify the questions. The result is the extensive research on various courses available for our students and the potential option of career choices. Now, the team is ready with this immense database to reach out to students.
FIRST AID TRAINING PROGRAMME The PD department partnered with St. John’s Ambulance Academy for a two day first aid training programme. It was conducted by expert trainers from the field who gave a lot of live experiments which helped the students understand the concept of first aid very clearly.
INTERNALIZING LIFESKILLS- TEACHERS It is not enough if only children are trained on life skills. Teachers need to understand how to internalize the prescribed life skills in the subjects that children learn day in and out. Apart from the academic learning, every lesson, every subject has at least one life skill hidden within it. The teacher needs to realize it and thus help the child understand the same. This session was very informative and a fun-filled one for the teachers across all branches.
ORIENTATION AND POSITIVE ATTITUDE TRAINING It is essential that every teacher keeps up their work ethics and always has a positive mindset with the students. It is essential that a teacher is strict with the student to achieve the desired result but at the same time it is also vital that they are an assertive and optimistic teacher for the students to look up to them as a role model. A session highlighting the same was conducted for the teachers. An orientation session also was conducted for the teachers talking about the prominence of Velammal as an institution.
OBESITY AND WAYS TO CONTROL IT Obesity seems to have become the order of the day. It has become a common problem both in children and adults. Thus the PD department addressed the same to the teachers through a thought provoking session. The trainers spoke about the reasons for obesity and the precautions that could be taken for the same. A healthy diet chart was proposed to them which they were happy with. Teachers were also instructed to have an eye on student’s lunch boxes to check on what they were bringing and to have a tab on the amount of junk food the child seems to intake.
MOTIVATION SESSION FOR PARENTS Parents of those children who were going to sit for their board exams were addressed through a motivational session. Parents were given tips on how they need to relate to their children during times of stress and exam tension. Parents were given worthy advice on how they need to be a pillar of support and not de-motivate them by comparing them with other friends, relatives and fellow students. Parents were given tips on how they could reduce their own tension and be at ease throughout the exam season.
SESSION FOR NON TEACHING STAFF Post a need based requirement, the PD team conducted a session for the Non Teaching Staff on time management and team work. Through the session staff to understand the clear fact that each person had their own role to play which is certainly inter-dependent on each other. Likewise it was also brought to their focus that it was essential to manage their time for the work allocated to them. Thus a session on time management and teamwork.
SESSION FOR HOUSEKEEPING STAFF A session on teamwork and verbal language etiquette was conducted for the housekeeping staff. The team took up these two topics since they thought that the housekeeping staff needed more boost and motivation to achieve better results. Activities and games accentuating on teamwork and time management were played at length on that one day session. The housekeeping staffs felt much cheerful and enthusiastic post the session.
The PD department has been imparting much sought after training sessions for everybody under the family of Velammal;through their utmost ardent efforts and they take much pride in doing so.
